SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ERADICATION OF POVERTY
Every year on 17 October, the world commemorates the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, also known as End Poverty Day to raise awareness about ongoing fight against poverty and to mobilise collective action to eliminate poverty in all its forms. The commemoration of this day comes at a time South Africa is experiencing the cost-of-living crisis and the yawning gap of inequality.
The goal of eradicating poverty is at the heart of the core mandate of the Department of Social Development. To commemorate this day, the Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mr Ganief Hendricks will conduct Integrated Community Registration Outreach Programme (ICROP) at Cofimvaba under Intsika Yethu Local Municipality.
The municipality is largely rural and characterised by underdevelopment and high levels of poverty. The outreach programme will focus on promoting access to services such as birth registration and social grants applications to address issues of child poverty and malnutrition in the area.
As part of the outreach programme, Deputy Minister Hendricks distributed school uniforms to learners at Intlangano and Sentile Primary Schools, respectively. This will ensure that learners from poor households remain in school and break the intergenerational cycle of poverty.
In the North-West Province, the MEC of Social Development, Ms Basetsana Sussana Dantjie will lead the commemoration of the International Day for Eradication of Poverty by handing over a cheque to an NDA-supported cooperative at Thota Ya Tau Village under Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality.
Thota Ya Tau Fish Harvest Primary Cooperative was established to create employment opportunities through fishing and fishery operations. The NDA recently approved grant funding of R321 225,58 that will assist the cooperative to purchase a fishing boat, mobile cold-room trailer and generator. This will in turn enable the cooperative to increase production, allow for expansion and sustainable employment for 10 of its members.
These outreach programmes form part of the DSD Month programme through which the Department of Social Development and its entities showcase promote access to services to alleviate poverty and hunger among the most vulnerable.
