DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT LEADS COMMUNITY DIALOGUES ON GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AND FEMICIDE IN POLOKWANE, LIMPOPO PROVINCE
Pretoria, 08 December 2025: Given increased levels of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) in the country and the classification of GBV as a national disaster, the Department of Social Development will on Tuesday, 09 December 2025 lead GBV community dialogues with residents of Polokwane at the Bolivia Lodge, in Limpopo Province.
The dialogues are aimed at advocating for an inclusive, comprehensive and long-term strategy, programmes and resources to prevent and eliminate GBVF by consequently prioritising the most marginalized. The dialogues will intensify efforts against GBV which affect all South Africans, in particular, vulnerable groups, women, children and persons with disabilities. The session will be held in line with this year’s 16 Days of Activism on No Violence against Women and Children Campaign which is observed under the theme; “Letsema: Men, Women, Boys and Girls working together to end Gender-Based Violence and Femicide”.
The Department of Social Development is leading implementation of Pillar 4 of the National Strategic Plan on GBVF which focuses on response, care, support and healing. Realization of this pillar can be made possible through collaboration with other departments and stakeholders from the Civil Society Organisations, law enforcement authorities, communities and families.
Community members will be afforded an opportunity to discuss matters ranging from the roles of the community, men as partners to end GBV and how women must be protected and feel safe in their communities.
Members of the media are invited to attend and cover Gender Based Violence dialogue planned as follows:
